Pay TV Goes Global: Countdown to Russia’s Digital Transition

Paid television services are on a growth tear in countries around the world — and Russia is emerging as a standout.

At the CSTB Conference in Moscow this week, Broadcom’s Dan Marotta, executive vice president and general manager of the Broadband Communications Group, will address the attendees from the keynote stage to talk about the technologies that enable the portability of video and introduce the company’s latest offerings for the country’s upcoming switch to digital TV.

The number of Russian households that subscribe to at least one Pay TV service tipped into the majority (55 percent) last year and is expected to reach 64 percent, or 35.7 million households, by 2016, according to recent research. As the market continues to grow, so does competition among service providers — and not just through subscription rates but also based on the features that allow consumers to decide how, where and when they watch television.

That’s where Broadcom’s technology enters the equation. Broadcom has developed several standards-based connected home technologies tailored to the Russian market to deliver high quality, high-definition content in a secure, cost-effective way. At the same time, Broadcom’s technologies are powering the infrastructure that will allow Russia’s burgeoning landscape to ramp up and meet the demands as they arrive.

Today’s launch of the BCM7563 will help Russian cable, satellite, terrestrial broadcast and IPTV operators not only transition from analog directly to digital TV programming but also streamline their roll-outs of new programming for customers. It will also allow them to offer interactive, IP-based services, such as digital video recording (DVR), video on demand (VoD), advanced Web browsers and shopping.

At the CSTB show this week, Broadcom will also be giving Russian TV operators a glimpse into the future of display technologies with a demo of the BCM7445 Ultra HD TV Video Decoder SoC that was unveiled at CES last month.
