With some technologies, adoption is less a matter of “if” and more about “when.”
Just a little over a year ago – at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show – Broadcom introduced the first family of chips utilizing the next generation of Wi-Fi, 802.11ac. We called it 5G WiFi® and talked about how the industry might see a day when it becomes the wireless standard for streaming music, video or other forms of content.
We’re getting much closer to that day.
Since we first introduced the standard, we’ve seen a number of partners and devices join the 5G WiFi ecosystem – companies such as Netgear, Belkin and Buffalo with their routers and other networking gear, as well as Asus with a laptop and LG with a smart TV.
That’s why we’re excited to welcome HTC to the 5G WiFi family today, with news from Mobile World Congress in Barcelona that the much-anticipated HTC One smartphone will offer Broadcom’s 5G WiFi connectivity.
It’s an important announcement because, by integrating 5G WiFi into a smartphone, HTC is offering their customers the fastest and most reliable connectivity yet, while also allowing them to preserve precious battery power. As consumers demand greater amounts of data and video on their mobile phones, they’re losing patience with connections that buffer more than they play.
Kouji Kodera, Chief Product Officer for HTC said that customers today “expect a seamless streaming experience” and credited Broadcom’s 5G WiFi with delivering “higher bandwidth and broader range” with its 5G WiFi technology.
Broadcom will continue to lead this transition to the next generation of Wi-Fi and we look forward to welcoming other companies to join the 5G WiFi family throughout 2013 and beyond.
